A Funny Thing Happened in the Family

May 11, 2017

It would seem that something which means poverty, disorder and violence every single day should be avoided entirely, but the desire to beget children is a natural urge. ~Phyllis Diller

Phyllis Diller just had a way with words! Her self-deprecating humor was enjoyed by many and she led the way for female comediennes. I knew she was funny, I could crack up just observing her attire, but I didn’t know that she was also the mother of six children. Raising this many kids no doubt gave her lots of humorous material! As a mom, I know that sometimes all you can do is sit back and laugh at the situation.

I believe all moms come equipped with a sense of humor as part of the survival process. Fortunately, moms are equally equipped with empathy and caring. Those things we look back and laugh over are often devastating in the moment. Moms tend to know how to navigate those events. I can't imagine how I would have survived the tumultuous teen years without my mom. Of course now, the drama and the memories seem quite amusing, but no one was laughing back then!

This Mother’s Day, if your mom is living, let her know that you love her sense of humor. Quirky, dry, or slap-stick, her humor contributed to more ease and grace in your household growing up. Your mom probably wasn’t ready for the stage like Phyllis Diller, but your family had a humor, cadence, and story all its own. Make your mom "famous" by honoring her and recording her funny memories and stories this year. You can do this with a pencil and a pad of paper or by arranging time with a personal historian. Make sure future generations know this side of you or your mom. Let them hear what was funny in your family.

As you enjoy Mother’s Day, encourage your mom to share a funny story about raising you. Surely there’s a treasure trove of these tales! And if your mom is no longer living, share a funny tale she would have told. Then, sit back and laugh  along with your family. Happy Mother's Day!
